“The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot. The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.” Psalm 16:5-6
Psalm 16 hands down stands out as one of my favorite Psalms in all the Psalter. The beautiful truths it contains are enough to satisfy the thirst of my soul when yet another morning arrives filled with all of its demands. You know the feeling, right?! When you feel like a thousand things are coming at you at once and no matter how fast you duck you simply cannot hide from all those anxieties, pressures, lists…. Somehow the text of Scripture turns life’s “demands” into sweet joys. Somewhere between my head asleep on the pillow, the buzzing of the alarm, and my sleepy eyes opening to read God’s Word my tired heart changes and is happy, refreshed, and full again. Empty no more. The Spirit of Christ can do that in us as we submit to Him and by grace do what His Word says. Jesus becomes our portion. Jesus becomes our cup. All our hunger and all our thirst is consumed by Him and we are able to sit coffee in hand, Bible on the night stand satisfied not my by the cup but by the Book.
Practicing the daily reading of the book of Psalms has blessed my prayer life in ways I could hardly express. Therein lies all the depth of human emotion, a survey of life’s trials & joys, and words that express praise to God in ways that my simple mind could not begin to piece together. A Psalm a day doesn’t keep the “doctor” away. No, it brings us nearer to our Great Physician, so that He may mend what’s broken and fix what we did not even know was wrong. A Psalm a day keeps you in the presence of the One in whose presence there is fullness of joy. And that is where I think we want to live.
With love in Christ,
